All in all, therefore, The Last Samuraialthough it purports to depict the historical reality of the Satsuma Rebellion, instead portrays only a microcosm of the beliefs, behaviors, and goals of the most radically conservative Meiji samuraidepicting them as warriors whose chief concern was an honorable death when most had become members of a modernized bureaucracy.
But why does popular media consistently reduce the samurai to a band of outdated medieval warriors, preferring the myth to the reality?
